This is one of 4 non-tilt ignition rack gears made by GM. This was used on the mid 80's and newer vehicles as it is slightly longer (3-1/2" long) than the earlier versions and has additional metal on the cutout edge. It will NOT FIT 1970's vehicles or Floor Shift designs.
The ignition lock cylinder rotates the sector gear. The sector gear pulls and pushes this rack gear and actuator rod up and down the column to operate the ignition switch. This gear (and rod) have been discontinued by GM long ago.

We have reverse engineered this piece from the original cast 'pot metal'. This tip can be easily installed for a long lasting repair.

How To Install the New Tip on the Old Rod

Remove the old rod

We recommend carefully filing or trimming the end of the rod where it is pinched to allow it to come out of the old tip. VERY GENTLY wiggle the rod out of place without bending the rod.

Install the new tip

Transfer the old rod to the new tip. Make sure you allow the tip to extend THROUGH the rod. Now gently pinch the rod using a vise or sharp pliers. It should stay in place and not jump out of the hole.
