Tilt Locking Pin & Spring Instructions (1969-200*)

This particular page shows you the proper assembly of the upper locking pin and spring in the tilt housing assembly. This mechanism is what locks the steering wheel when you rotate the key to "Lock" and remove the key. These 2 parts serve no other purpose. This design was used on GM, Jeep and Chrysler vehicles with Saginaw design tilt columns. Proper assembly is critical to ensure the pin moves into the proper locking position and the spring (once installed crrectly) does not interfere with the smooth operation of the rack gears.
The upper loop of the locking pin spring needs to fit into the opening of the sector gear so it moves back and forth with the gear when the key is turned in either direction. This holds the pin against the flat edge of the gear.
